How to Access Google Drive Files Offline

You cannot possibly be in the internet zone all the time and being offline keeps you from using a lot of important apps and services – one of which is Google Drive. Fortunately though, there is a way to access Google Drive files offline.

Through this tutorial, I’m going to show you as how to access Google Drive even if you’re not connected to the internet. You’ll be able to browse through the files in your Google Drive (including google docs, google sheets and google slides) and even edit them offline. Let’s jump right into it.

Pre-requisites

Before we start with the tutorial, make sure you have the following requiremtents met:

  • Internet access to do the initial setup.
  • Google Chrome browser installed in your computer. Click here to download if you don’t have one.
  • Google Docs offline extension installed in your Google Chrome browser.

Accessing Google Drive Offline

Once you’ve met all the pre-requisites, take the following steps to access Google Drive Offline:

  1. Open Google Chrome browser and sign in to it if you haven’t already.

  2. Go to Google Drive main page.
  3. Click the gear icon on the top to go to Settings > General.

  4. Check the box that says "Create, open and edit your recent Gogole Docs, Sheets, and Slides files on this device while offline".

  5. Click Done.
  6. Back on Google Drive main page, right-click on the files (Docs, Sheets, or Slides) you want to access offline and select "Available offline". To select multiple files, hold Shift + Command (macOS), or Shift + Control (Windows) while clicking the files.

  7. Finally, back on the top of Google Drive main page, click the icon next to the search bar, and toggle "Offline preview" on.

That’s it! Now you are able to accessa and edit your Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides offline. The changes you’ll make in the documents will be updated and refleted on your Google Live account when you’ll be connected to the Internet.
