Yorba Linda High softball coach Sharon Farrell, who built the Mustangs into a consistent winner, has resigned after 11 seasons, she confirmed Tuesday, Sept. 15.
Farrell, a biology teacher and department chair at Yorba Linda, said the changing landscape of coaching and teaching prompted her to step away from the softball field.
“It was a very, very hard decision,” she said. “With everything going on, it was the right timing.”
Farrell started the program with only freshmen and sophomores but took Yorba Linda into Division 1 competition from the start. She led the Mustangs to three league titles and seven playoff appearances.
She guided Yorba Linda to a surprise run to the Division 1 semifinals in 2013, the same spring the Mustangs took second at the prestigious Carew Classic.
Farrell was the Register’s coach of the year for the 2013 season.
She compiled a 145-87-2 record and helped mentor Orange County standouts such as Paige von Sprecken (San Diego/Texas), Taylor Townsend (Connecticut) and Ashley Yoo (Army).
But one of Farrell’s fondest memories is starting the Yorba Linda program from scratch. The Mustangs played junior varsity their first season and finished 21-1.
“Opening a brand new program was really awesome,” said Farrell, who played softball at Brea Olinda and Chapman University. “It was a good run.”
