The Women’s International Music Network (the WiMN) announced the honorees for its annual She Rocks Awards on Tuesday afternoon via a virtual press conference led by founder Laura B. Whitmore.
Since 2012, the She Rocks Awards has paid tribute to women in the music industry in conjunction with the annual NAMM Show held at the Anaheim Convention Center in January. Since NAMM announced its 2021 convention will be a virtual one due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the She Rocks Awards will also be held virtually and livestream via parade.com at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, 2021.
Lzzy Hale, 2020 She Rocks honoree and frontwoman of rock band Halestorm, will host the 2021 She Rocks Awards which will recognize Los Angeles’ all-female rock band The Go-Go’s; The Runaways lead vocalist, actress and solo artist Cherie Currie; jazz and rock drummer Cindy Blackman Santana; Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee; Actress, comedian and singer-songwriter Margaret Cho; composer, pianist and music director and president of The Alliance for Women Film Composers Starr Parodi; Alicia Keys’ studio coordinator, Grammy Award-winning recording engineer and co-founder of Jungle City Ann Mincieli; co-president and co-owner of The Music People Sharon Hennessey; and senior vice president for Peloton Interactive Gwen Riley.
“I think it’s super important that we lift up and elevate other women musicians because I don’t know anyone else who’s going to,” The Go-Go’s guitarist-vocalist Jane Wiedlin said during the press conference on the importance of a show like the She Rocks Awards.
“I’ve been saying since the ’80s, like, why isn’t it more split 50/50 between men rockers and women rockers,” she continued. “Because, well, we’re actually more than 50 percent of the population. I’ve always felt like, why aren’t we represented? I still feel like we have a really long way to go, but I think acknowledging, sharing and supporting other women musicians is so important. It’s why She Rocks rocks.”
The virtual ceremony will include live music performances, awards and speeches, special guests appearances and a silent auction. The awards show is free and open to the general public to stream. There’s also a special VIP Experience ticket that includes the VIP She Rocks Box, which will be delivered to your home prior to the event, and access to a VIP after-party with the opportunity to hang out with honorees and the She Rocks Awards team post-show. The VIP experience is $100 and can be purchased at sherocksawards.com/tickets.
Previous award recipients include Melissa Etheridge, Pat Benatar, Gloria Gaynor, The B-52s, Sheila E, Chaka Khan, Lisa Loeb, The Bangles and more as well as a slew of female-identifying role models from all walks of the music and audio industries.
“There’s an amazing strength and feeling with that kind of bond,” Go-Go’s bassist Kathy Valentine said of the camaraderie among women working in the industry. “Only we know what it feels like. From the minute I joined The Go-Go’s, I was so drawn to the idea of sisterhood and as that just gets bigger and more kind of spread across all realms, I think there’s so much power and feminine energy and I think it’s the way of the future.”
“I think we put up with a lot of stuff about how we’re supposed to look and how we’re supposed to age and what we’re supposed to do and how long we’re supposed to do it,” she continued. “I think rock and roll is the perfect realm to kind of bust that wide open and say, ‘No! We don’t have those rules. We don’t have those boundaries.’”
