Donna Vidrine had taken an early lead when the first votes were announced on Tuesday night, but Knoblock edged ahead by night’s end and held his lead with Wednesday’s update of the unofficial results. He is followed by Jim Dahl, a retired Orange County Fire Authority captain.
There are still thousands of ballots, largely mail-in, left to count across Orange County.
There are a total of eight candidates competing to fill the two-year term vacated by former Mayor Dan Bane, who in April resigned when he and his family moved to Missouri.
Chris Duncan, a homeland security attorney, and the race’s only incumbent Gene James, a security consultant and Army veteran, continued to lead on Wednesday in the race for two four-year seats on the City Council.
On Wednesday, Vidrine, a registered nurse and business owner, submitted a statement congratulating Knoblock, Duncan and James on securing dais seats, saying “I respect the hard work, expense and efforts of all the candidates in the San Clemente City Council Election 2020.”
